The company was formed in 2004 to pursue Renewable Energy projects by the combination of the interests of Pennant Wind Ltd and
the Walters Group.
Following the commitment by the UK government to achieving 10% of UK generation from renewable sources and the parallel commitment to the same by WAG by 2010 Walters recognised the opportunity presented by the emerging renewables industry across Wales. Since late 2001 Walters had been working with Pennant Wind Ltd and later Eco2 Ltd on its Pendragon Wind farm proposal on Walters owned land in Blaenau Gwent. From this business relationship came a thorough understanding of the potential opportunity that the emerging renewable energy development industry presented for the Group in Wales. Significantly Walters also owned
more than 15,000 acres of land throughout southern Wales.
Walters Group is one of Wales’ Top 300 companies and in recent years has diversified its interests very significantly. The last 10 years has seen the Group broaden its interests significantly beyond the mining industry. Notable projects include;
- The new racecourse and hotel development at Ffos Las near Trimsaran, Carmarthenshire.
- The Castlegate land remediation and housing development in Caerphilly CBC.
- Land reclamation projects at Felindre steelworks Swansea, the old Blue Circle Cement Works at Rhoose Point near Barry, and Rogesrtone Power Station near Newport.
- Major roadwork schemes include Junction 13 on the M4 motorway, Caerphilly Bypass, Mountain Ash Bypass, Porth Bypass and A470 Merthyr-Brecon Road.
Recent contract awards include;
- The reclamation of the former Corus steelworks site in Ebbw Vale along with partners Blaenau Gwent CBC and the WDA. The £3.5m value contract involves excavating and removing about 600,000 tonnes of soil and rubble to create a 50 acre platform for siting 500,000 ft2 of office space and the new 111 bed community hospital.
- The £7m contract for ground preparation at the Pencoed Technology Park. The scheme is carried out under a partnering agreement with the WDA and sectional agreements with both Bridgend CBC and Rhondda Cynon Taff CBC.
We are developing a number of wind energy projects in Wales. All sites have been selected due to their strong wind resources following a careful site identification process. We aim to keep people in neighbouring areas informed of our plans and, where appropriate, consult on how communities can benefit in practical ways from our projects.
Most of our planned sites are within the TAN 8 strategic areas designated by the Welsh Assembly Government as suitable for wind energy development. We are keen to play a part in helping the Assembly Government reach its renewable energy targets by 2010 to tackle the threat posed by climate change.
